Let me clarify. I did not say most powerful or most sophisticated... and this obviously meant different things to you and I.

IMO, I believe the V8 T4R (and GX470) to have one of the most refined drivetrains in terms of relaibility, efficiency, and polish. Just well rounded overall. Excellent gas mileage, great power, and a butter smooth 5sp transmission. All in a proven and capable chassis on and off road. For a body on frame SUV, it's quite nimble on road, but the T4R would run circles around those tall wagons in the dirt. 270hp and 330ft/lbs. Yet still gives real world 19-21mpg on the fwy on 87 octane.

Car sold to a good new home!

If money were not an object, I would go with the E55 AMG wagon

Since there's a price cap, I would have to say the B5 RS4 Avant

Gas is jsut going to go up and up.

I would not get an SUV at all. Plenty of fun, large, performance oriented wagons out there.
Audi Allroad (2.7 BiTurbo or 4.2 V8)
Volvo V70 R (w/ AWD 300hp)

Volvo V70 R is MSRP'ed @ $43,000 which means you can get it down from there.

I would definitely not buy anything made by the Chrysler/Mercedes corporations (including all their brands) nor would I suggest a Land Rover-- I can give you horror stories on those.

Sadly Gone: 2002 IS3 5MT w/ LSD (Solar Yellow); 2004 IS3 5MT w/LSD (Bluestone)

Current: 1999 Range Rover 4.0 SE (Epsom Green/Walnut)

So is the new SLK 55 R&T called it the first AMG that wasn't just about the engine. I concur.

and a porsche cayenne is well past the original 45K price brad set.

I have a 4Runner...best thing I've owned so far. I'd highly recommend the new one. Either engines would do...they're both very powerful, and burn about the same amount of fuel. If you have the $$, get the V8. It now has VVTi, so it churns out 270 hp and 325 lb ft of torque - probably as fast as an IS.

I vote you get the Subaru Legacy GT wagon. Great engine and for my area AWD comes in handy when winter rolls around. Plus I think it looks great and it wont cost you an arm and a leg.
