James May explains why supercars are 'pointless' - Do you agree?

James May, a.k.a. Top Gear's Captain Slow, has taken up the query and come to the conclusion that the speedy little devils are pointless.

He intends to make his point by asking, "what benefit has accrued to Italy, principal arbour of the mechanism of the Renaissance, by their existence?", and then by comparing the effect that supercars have have on the world to the effects produced by Gore-Tex and penicillin and the radio and the Maxim gun. Mr. May, you have us there – we'd rather our doctor prescribed us antibiotics and not a Ferrari if we had a staph infection. That is, unless we had at least seven days to live, in which case we'd take the Ferrari and trade a ride in it for a prescription.

Most supercars are as useful and as pointless as marshmallows, with little technology actually trickling down to more affordable machinery – at least on a consistent basis. In fact, we're mildly surprised there's any debate left in this issue – even in jest. If May wants to talk about pointless things, let's start with the Salad Shooter or anything else sold by infomercial. We'd live without a Lamborghini Murciélago as soon as we'd live without s'mores, which means that we'd do it but we'd really rather not. Maybe the world hasn't been changed by supercars, but our world has, and that's good enough for us. Ergo, when May ends his piece with "Prove me wrong," we'll admit we can't. But we can prove his article pointless.

The fact of a supercar being pointless or not resides merely on the person who makes the opinion. Some would say, for example, that the Bugatti Veyron has 500 horses too many for what you can do with them, but whoever owns one may think that the status and rep earned by having a 1000+ bhp beast in the garage, even when he doesn't fully use a quarter of that power all the time, is all but pointless. This is because supercar buyers usually buy for the status a car can give when arriving to the poker night at the casino. It's an exclusivity game more than anything else, and supercars are exclusive.

This being said, I personally don't think they are pointless. Supercars are amazing machines, and those who make them are artists in their own right. The only thing that may veer an opinion towards saying "pointless" is that not everyone can own one .

I could see why poor people like me could think that they are pointless, but if you're rich and you're the type of person that likes everyone to know that you're rich they make complete sense.

I for one think they are completely pointless because you can't drive most supercars to 1/50th of their capacity legally on public roads. If I were to take one to the track, I'd be too worry about wadding it up or killing myself in it to push it to it's limits. With that said, I want a Saleen S7 so bad. So bad it burns like the clap.

Practical for everyday life? No, not at all.
Purposefully built and driven? Yes, Art on wheels and a gearhead's wet dream.
Does this constitute pointlessness? NO! Just because they aren't the best thing to take to Publix or the mall doesn't make them pointless. I think a better question would not be if they are pointless, thats a stupid question, but if they are practical for a particular application.

You make one post in the garage per year and this is the best you've come up with?

Of course they are pointless. In practical every day situations for what you would want to do with a car there is no point in owning a supercar. Supercars are created just to be as flamboyant as possible and to push the boundaries of car technology.

And while we're on the topic of supercars, I personally would like a Koenigsegg (anyone will do).

Of course they're pointless! But their fun! That's what they (are suppose) to be made for. I'll take my F430 now.

Of course they are pointless in theory, but it is a stupid comment for him to make, because for the most part, car purchasing decisions are not made in practicality. If that where so we'd all be driving 4-cylinder Camry's. For people that love cars the thrill of driving and the feeling they get while in their car is indescribable, so for those few enthusiasts who can afford them, it makes plenty of sense, they enjoy it.

As a guy who makes a living being an idiot on a car show, he'd be best served to stfu and enjoy the paycheck he gets from having one of the easiest jobs on earth.
