Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler just took delivery of the world's fastest convertible. The Hennessey Venom GT Spyder will accelerate to 200mph in 15.9 seconds, eight seconds faster than a Bugatti Veyron. Tyler was the first person to ask if he could have his without a top.
"Steven came to us last year and asked if we could build his Venom GT as a roadster," says John Hennessey. "We had to make a few structural changes to our integrated rollcage in order to be able to fit the removable top. This increased the weight of our vehicle by about 30 lbs to a curb weight of 2743 lbs (1244 kilograms). We decided to increase the Venom GTs power to 1244 bhp to maintain our 1 horsepower per 1 kilogram power to weight ratio.

Only five Venom GTs will be built this year and Tyler's remains the only convertible. At a price of $1.1 million for the Lotus Exige chassis lengthened and braced to make room for a 7.0-liter, twin-turbo V8, it's easy to understand why interested customers are few and far between.
When Matt rode in a prototype a year ago, he described the hand-built supercar as, "the best way to die."

You get a roll bar for 1.1m? I feel like in a roadcar that could be more dangerous then helpful?
It's an extended lotus and just to fit the engine and they added a few things, i think alot is to be desired at a price level of over a million and this is not it. Although it looks cool I think a more suitable price range would of been like 250-350,000 not 4 x the amount when most of the R&D was already done by lotus, they just extended it and put a big engine in it.

Complete waste of money. I would much rather have an FXX or any "X" Ferrari for that kind of money...even a regular Enzo, though much slower, would at least look better, and be a Ferrari.

Yup

With this car you gotta use the same arguement as the Lexus LF-A... you are paying for something "different"... not necessarily performance per dollar.

I have a funny feeling this car is a pain in the ass to drive too... I don't see any videos on youtube of this car successfully being pushed. In the video I see that has the Hennessey team themselves... they are just cruising around in the car with straight line bursts of speed.

I really wanna be a racecar driver... :-/

With the LF-A you can see where the money went. It is a true engineering marvel. And I think the engine in the LF-A sounds amazing.

This car is a overpowered Elise.

Yup

At least the LFA is it's own car built from the ground up by a car manufacturer. The Venom GT can have 2000hp and claim as many records as it wants. You can't hide the obvious truth, it's a tuner car. When you borrow the most important part of another vehicle it will never deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as cars half its price. The guy is in over his head and way out of his league.

The bigger issue i think, is whether the Venom is worth the $1 million price tag base on its performance. Many people have said that the LFA is not worth the money because you can get several other cars out there with the same performance if not better for much less. Until we see some real performance numbers from the Venom, i don't know if you can say the same thing about it.
