smart (car) tour 2015

Yours truly vividly recalls that when the Smart car was launched in the United States in early 2008, it was accompanied by a driving event tour through the country. Hopes for a fun-to-drive, tiny, agile rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive baby Porsche 911 of sorts were quickly quashed by perhaps the crappiest, jerkiest "automated manual" transmission known to man. Now, as the city car par excellence sees its 4th-generation, a mechanical overhaul including new Twinamic dual clutch and (hallelujah!) a proper clutch-pedal manual transmission as options perhaps bring the smart car's early promise closer to reality.

As with that original launch, smart car is launching a driving tour, dubbed the smart tour 2015 that will let you sample whether or not it has indeed improved. In their words: "Attendees get the chance to test drive our 2016 smart, see smart-inspired installations done by local artists, engage with interactive displays, and design custom screen-printed swag!"

Unfortunately, yours truly didn't hear word of it until after it had passed through New York City, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago and San Diego. Five cities remain, but, as of this writing, you'll need tons of patience and a flexible schedule to partake, since the information parsed out by smart is dribbling out slowly, in fits and spurts. In some cases, it's more of a "save the date", since precise locations are TBD (to be determined). Also, no word on whether the minimum driving age is 18, 21 or 25.

Yours truly hopes to update this post as time and incoming information allow. For the time being, we strongly suggest checking out these two general Facebook links ( and ), plus individual event Facebook pages listed below for updates. Here's what we know so far regarding the remaining stops:
